Günther: “To be rewarded like this today with a podium is fantastic”

Maximilian Günther took his first podium of the season as he finished in third place in Berlin for round seven of the Formula E Championship.

Starting in eighth, Günther made his way up the leaderboard and onto the podium to secure a valuable 15 points for himself and the Maserati MSG team, as he earned his place on the podium on the final lap.

Talking after the race Günther was feeling extremely happy to be on the podium, especially in front of his home crowd:

“I’m extremely happy to be on the podium today in front of my home crowd and first podium for Maserati in Formula E and it’s really a big relief.”

Talking about the team’s progress from the start of the season to now Günther felt the hard work paid off and to be rewarded with a podium was a reflection of the team’s effort:

“The last few races we have seen great progress after a tough start to the season but we couldn’t score the points for different reasons.

“I obviously kept going and kept believing in ourselves and keep working and improving and to be rewarded like this today with a podium is fantastic.”

The Maserati driver felt there was improvement following the results in qualifying, which saw him start the race from eighth on the grid following a mistake in his quarter-final duel:

“I felt strongly from the first practice onwards, obviously then qualifying was a slight disappointment to be out in the quarter-final already but I knew that it would be a very strategic race and I think that’s what we’ve seen today.

“To be fair I wasn’t really thinking about the podium, my goal was to score many points today.”

Günther was impressed with tyre management considering some damage to his front wing:

“Tyre management was good, I damaged my front wing a bit and maybe this played a factor as well but from my side pretty consistent over the race.”
