Mitch Evans finally breaks his Monaco curse, ending the streak of four failed attempts to win despite leading the majority of the race. The Kiwi finished ahead of Jaguar TCS teammate Nick Cassidy with the British team executing a flawless strategy to claim Jaguar’s second 1-2 finish in Formula E.
Starting the race third and fourth, Evans and Cassidy would have their work cut out to catch and pass Pascal Wehrlein and pole sitter Stoffel Vandoorne of DS Penske who lead the pack away in the early phase of the race. But a strategic masterclass of the first deployment of the ATTACK MODE meant the Kiwi pair only took 11 laps to move to the front of the pack and pull clear.
A Virtual safety car caused by Edo Mortara crash at the swimming pool didn’t phase theJaguar pairing as they continued to pull clear of the chasing pack swapping positions on lap 14 to ensure optimum energy usage. Cassidy briefly lead the pack before swapping back on with Evans on lap 17. Evans and Cassidy remained unchallenged for remainder of the race and went on to claim Jaguar’s second 1-2 in Formula E history.
Pole sitter Stoffel Vandoorne managed to hold on to third position, claiming his first podium since his Formula E Championship win two seasons ago and the teams first podium of the season, a significant feat for the DS Penske team in front of a home crowd.
Evans’ victory moves him up to fifth in the drivers’ championship standings, while Jaguar TCS Racing continues to build on their dominant start to the season having built an impressive lead in the Teams’ standings.
Outside of the podium, two time champion, Jean Eric Vergne topped off a great day for DS Penske finishing fourth. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein finished fifth ahead of Oliver Rowland for Nissan Formula E team crossed the line in sixth. Seventh place went to Antonio Felix da Costa of TAG Heuer Porsche, followed by Nissan’s Sacha Fenestraz of Nissan Formula E Team. Maximilian Günther of Maserati MSG Racing, took ninth place securing more points for the Monaco-based outfit, while Norman Nato of Andretti Formula E rounded out the top ten.
Mitch Evans, No. 9, Jaguar TCS Racing, said:
“It feels mega, and a lot of relief to finally get that first win here. It feels like it should have come a few years earlier, but finally got it done today. Extra special as it’s my first win of the season as well here. Hopefully this is a turning point for me and I can start to consistently get big points. I’ve been chipping away at it but nothing too crazy so it’s come at a crucial time. It just feels amazing, and a massive team effort with Nick today to get a Jaguar 1-2 here in Monaco.”
Nick Cassidy, No. 37, Jaguar TCS Racing, said:
“It’s an unreal feeling, it’s been an epic day. Last year, we were 1-2 as well so it’s pretty cool actually that it’s the other way around, I’m really happy for him. We can be really proud of our effort today and it’s a great result for Jaguar TCS Racing.”
