Lucas Auer is out the Daytona 24 hours after sustaining an injury in FP1 crash.

Lucas Auer has suffered a fractured lumbar due to an incident in the first practice session for the Daytona 24 hours.

In a statement the Winward Racing team put out they said:

“Lucas Auer, driver of the No.57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, has been admitted to Halifax personnel, Auer has sustained significant fractured lumbar injuries in an incident earlier Thursday near the end of the first official IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice session.”

The team went on further to comment on Auer’s current condition:

“Auer has been awake and alert since the incident and has been communicating with family back home in Europe and his Winward Racing teammates here in Daytona Beach.”

This is a big blow to the pole-sitting GTD car losing one of its pros, but they are still committed to the race:

“Winward Racing will compete in this weekend’s race and the replacement tub is presently on its way to Daytona International Speedway from the team race shop in Texas. A replacement driver for Auer is currently being finalised.”
